The construction output decreased by 8.3%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in March. In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 7.8% lower. The approximate value of permitted constructions increased by 49.1%. The number of started dwellings decreased by 17.6%, y-o-y. The number of completed dwellings increased by 0.2%, y-o-y.

Construction output decreased by 7.8%, month-on-month. Production in building construction dropped by 11.1%, year-on-year, and the civil engineering construction decreased by 0.9%. “Construction output decreased by 8.3%, year-on-year, in March and also in the month-on-month comparison a considerable decrease was recorded. While the y-o-y decrease was fully owing to the building construction, the m-o-m one was contributed to more by civil engineering construction,” Petra Cuřínová, Head of the Construction Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says.

“The approximate value of the constructions permitted in March reached CZK 66 billion and it increased by a half, year-on-year. This increase was significantly influenced by granting a building permit to six constructions with budgets over one billion crowns. Should we deduct them, the approximate value would decrease by 7%,” Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department of the CZSO, says.

Construction of 2 706 dwellings started in March and the number dropped by 17.6% due to dwellings in family houses. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings increased, year-on-year. The number of completed dwellings amounted to 2 559 dwellings, which was a year-on-year increase by 0.2%, mainly in the category of multi-dwelling buildings.

According to Eurostat, construction output in the EU27 in February 2024 decreased by 0.6%, year-on-year. According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for March 2024 on 21 May 2024.

More detailed information on the development in construction can be found in the supplementary information to the news release on construction.

Notes:
Concurrently with publishing the results for January 2024, the base period for short-term statistics changed. Indices are newly compared to the average of the year 2021 (it was 2015 before); new weighting schemes have been used that were derived from the results of structural business statistics for the year 2021. For conversion to constant prices, new price indices have been used (also based on the year 2021). For seasonal adjustment, new models in the JDEMETRA+ programme were created.
The year-on-year development of construction output (production) has been adjusted for the influence of the number of working days. Month-on-month rates have also been seasonally adjusted.
